Kinley Way

Kinley Way
Neighborhood Lincoln Place
Miller Avenue (until 1930)

This alley was laid out as part of Miller Avenue in the Brierley plan of lots in 1902.[1]

Lincoln Place was annexed by the City of Pittsburgh in 1929.[2] Pittsburgh already had a Miller Street, so Miller Avenue was renamed by a city ordinance the following year; the part from Lindberg Avenue north to the city line became Kinley Way.[3]

Former southern segment

There used to be a southern segment of Kinley Way from Scorer Street to Lougean Avenue, a continuation of Kinley Avenue. This alley was laid out in 1917 in the Calhoun Park plan of lots.[4] That plan did not give this alley a name, though all other alleys in the plan were named with letters of the alphabet: B Way (later Oakleaf Way), C Way, D Way, and so on through L Way.[4] It seems likely that this alley should have been the missing A Way, but the name was omitted in the plan by mistake. In any case, after Lincoln Place was annexed by Pittsburgh, the city believed this alley was unnamed, and it was named Kinley Way in 1930.[5] (It probably would have been renamed anyway, as Pittsburgh already had an A Street.)

This southern segment of Kinley Way no longer exists.
