Stratford Avenue

From Pittsburgh Streets
Stratford Avenue
Neighborhood Friendship
Onyx Street (until 1892)

This street was originally named Onyx Street.[1] The location of the part of Onyx Street from modern Roup Avenue to Coral Street was officially established by a city ordinance in 1886;[2] the segment from Coral Street to Penn Avenue was located by an ordinance in January 1892.[3]

By September 1892, the street had been widened by 10 feet to a width of 50 feet and had become known as Stratford Avenue.[4] An 1896 city ordinance officially accepted Stratford Avenue as a public street from Roup Place (today Roup Avenue) and Coral Street.[5] The portion from Coral Street to Penn Avenue was dedicated to the city in 1900 by Priscilla S. Hugus[6] (see Hugus Place).

The name Stratford Avenue was officially established by an ordinance in 1910.[7]
