Neighborhood | Crafton Heights |
Grant Avenue (until 1922) | |
Origin of name | Ulysses S. Grant |
This street was laid out as Grant Avenue in 1902 in the Ideal Plan No. 1.[1][2] The parallel streets in the plan were Garfield Avenue (today part of Berry Street), Taylor Avenue (today Straka Street), and Jackson Avenue (today Justine Street), all named for presidents; Grant Avenue was named for Ulysses S. Grant (1822–1885), 18th President of the United States (1869–1877).
Chartiers Township, including the modern Crafton Heights neighborhood, was annexed by Pittsburgh in 1921.[3] Pittsburgh already had a Grant Street downtown, so in 1922 Grant Avenue was renamed Oakglen Street.[4]
