Side Alley (until 1914)

This former alley ran from Bigelow Boulevard to Brereton Street, parallel to and west of Haran Street.[1]

It was laid out in 1870 in a plan of lots for E. P. Jones, Charles Jeremy, and others, though that plan did not give it a name.[2] It was named Side Alley by 1872.[3] It became Side Way in 1914, when a city ordinance changed all alleys in Pittsburgh to ways.[4]

In a 1937 Post-Gazette column joking about Pittsburgh street names, Charles F. Danver grouped Side Way with Back Way in East Allegheny, Front Way in Esplen (today Field Way), and Rear Way in Regent Square.[5] And in a 1944 article in the Pittsburgh Press, Gilbert Love included Side Way in a list of ways that "in the competition for names . . . have had to take what was left by the larger streets."[6]

The portion of Side Way from Bigelow Boulevard to Stockholm Street was vacated in 1936,[7] and the part from Brereton Street to Kenney Way was vacated in 1985.[8] The segment between Stockholm Street and Kenney Way seems never to have been officially vacated, but in any case it does not exist today.
