Davis Street (until 1923) | |
Origin of name | John T. Davis |
This street was laid out by Thomas Mellon in a plan of lots recorded in 1870, though that plan did not give it a name.[1]
John T. Davis subdivided part of Mellon's plan on the west side of this street in 1872 and 1876, though his plan also did not name the street.[2] The 1886 Hopkins atlas labels lots 8, 11, and 12 in Mellon's plan, on the west side of this street, with the name Davis.[3] Accordingly, this street had been named Davis Street by 1899.[4][5]
St. Clair Borough, including Davis Street, was annexed by Pittsburgh in 1923.[6] Later that year, many streets in the former borough were renamed to fix duplicates; to avoid confusion with Davis Avenue in Brighton Heights, Davis Street was changed to Syrian Street.[7] This took the name of Syrian Way to the south, which had been given that name when it was laid out in 1903.
