This street was originally laid out as First Avenue in 1903 as part of the West Liberty Plan No. 2 by the Beechwood Improvement Company.[1][2]
The Borough of Beechview was created in 1905.[3] In 1908, a borough ordinance changed the names of many streets; First Avenue was renamed Canton Avenue.[4]
Beechview was annexed by the City of Pittsburgh in 1909,[5] and the name Canton Avenue was officially established by a Pittsburgh ordinance that same year.[6]
Canton Avenue is famous as the steepest street in Pittsburgh (and possibly the steepest in the United States), with a grade of 37 percent.[2]
