Zurich Street
From Pittsburgh Streets
Zurich Street | |
---|---|
Neighborhood | Northview Heights |
Fate | Vacated in 1958 |
Simon Avenue (until 1934) | |
Origin of name | Simon Simon |
This street formerly ran east–west to the south of what is today the eastern end of Hazlett Street.[1]
It was laid out as Simon Avenue in 1913 in a plan of lots by Simon Simon and Joseph Guckert, Jr.[2]
The eastern half of Northview Heights was annexed by Pittsburgh in 1931.[3] In 1934, a city ordinance renamed streets here to fix duplicates; in order to prevent confusion with Simen Avenue in Brighton Heights, Simon Avenue was changed to Zurich Street.[4]
Zurich Street was vacated in 1958.[5]
To the best of my knowledge, Zurich is the alphabetically last street name Pittsburgh has ever had. Today the alphabetically last street in Pittsburgh is either Zulu Way in Lower Lawrenceville or Zulema Street in Central Oakland.
