Spring Way (Strip District and Lawrenceville)

From Pittsburgh Streets
Not to be confused with Spring Way (North Oakland).
Spring Way
Neighborhoods Lower Lawrenceville, Strip District
Origin of name Perhaps a spring of water
Spring Alley (until 1914)
Origin of name Perhaps a spring of water

Spring Alley appears in William Darby's 1815 map of Pittsburgh, in the "Northern Liberties,"[1] as the lower Strip District was originally called. This map shows most of the line of the alley occupied by a wide stream or narrow pond,[1] which suggests that the name refers to a spring of water.

The alley became Spring Way in 1914 when a city ordinance changed all alleys to ways.[2]
