Shetland Street

Shetland Street
Neighborhood Larimer
Spring Street (until 1881)
Origin of name Nearby spring

This street was laid out as Spring Street in 1856 in the subdivision of the farm of William Larimer, Jr.[1] (1809–1875), for whom Larimer Avenue and the neighborhood of Larimer are named.

It appears, unlabeled, in an 1862 map of Allegheny County, which shows a racecourse between this street and Meadow Street.[2] Spring Street is labeled in the 1872 Hopkins atlas.[3] The maps in this atlas also show a small stream beginning nearby, north of the intersection of Spring Street and Park Street (now Paulson Avenue), on the property of Richard Thompson; it flowed from a springhouse through Thompson's property to Negley Run.[3] Presumably this is the spring for which the street was named.

Spring Street was renamed Shetland Street in 1881 to fix the duplication with Spring Alley in the Strip District (today Spring Way).[4]
