This alley was laid out as Spring Alley in 1872 as part of the plan of North Homestead, which straddled the line between the City of Pittsburgh and the Borough of Swissvale.[1][2] It was named for a spring near the corner of this alley and Commercial Street.[1]
In 1881, a Pittsburgh city ordinance renamed many streets to fix duplicates. There was another Spring Alley in the Strip District (today Spring Way), so this alley in the North Homestead plan was changed to Satyr Alley.[3] It became Satyr Way in 1914 when another ordinance changed all alleys in Pittsburgh to ways.[4]
