Rockland Avenue

From Pittsburgh Streets
Rockland Avenue
Neighborhood Beechview
12th Avenue North (until 1907)
Origin of name Sequential numbering of avenues in West Liberty plans

This avenue was originally laid out as 12th Avenue North in 1903 as part of the West Liberty Plan No. 3 by the Beechwood Improvement Company.[1] The avenues in this plan continued the numbering begun in the West Liberty Plan No. 2.[2]

In 1907, a West Liberty borough ordinance changed 12th Avenue (both north and south parts) to Rockland Avenue.[3]

The Borough of West Liberty was annexed by the City of Pittsburgh in 1908.[4] The following year, a Pittsburgh city ordinance officially established Rockland Avenue as the name of the north part of the avenue, while changing the south part to Ringwalt Street.[5]
