Rising Main Avenue

Rising Main Avenue
Neighborhood Fineview
Origin of name Rising water main from Howard Street Pumping Station

Rising Main Avenue is named for the rising water main that leads from the pumping station on Howard Street at its base to a reservoir at the top. The Howard Street Pumping Station was completed in 1882[1] and originally pumped water to tanks on Lanark Street.[2] Today the water is pumped to the McNaugher Reservoir at the top of Lafayette Avenue.

This street appears as an unlabeled 30-foot street in John Hannah's 1882 plan of lots.[3] It is named Rising Main Street in the 1890 Hopkins atlas.[2] The name Rising Main Avenue was officially established by a Pittsburgh city ordinance in 1910.[4]
