Reynolds Street

From Pittsburgh Streets
Reynolds Street
Neighborhood Point Breeze
Origin of name John F. Reynolds

Reynolds Street is named for John F. Reynolds (1820–1863), Union general in the Civil War.[1][2]

The street was laid out and named about 1874. An 1868 plan subdividing the Woodrow Farm shows an unnamed 40-foot street in the approximate location of modern Reynolds Street from about Lexington Avenue to about Dunfermline Street,[3] and this unnamed street is also shown in the 1872 Hopkins atlas.[4] An updated plan of lot no. 1 in the Woodrow Farm plan, surveyed in March 1874, shows Reynolds Street at its intersection with Homewood Avenue.[5] A lot on "Reynolds' avenue" was sold on May 30, 1874.[6][7] A city ordinance establishing the grade of Linden Avenue from Penn Avenue to Reynolds Street was passed in Common Council on September 28, 1874,[8]:82 though in the annual report of the Survey Committee delivered at the end of the year, it was described as "Linden avenue from Penn avenue to ⸻ street,"[8]:118 which suggests that Reynolds Street may not have been named yet when this survey had been made.

The name of the street was officially established as Reynolds Street by an ordinance in 1881.[9] It is shown in the 1882 Hopkins atlas (incorrectly labeled "Reynolds Ave."), along with the lots from the Woodrow Farm plan, which demonstrates that Reynolds Street did not exactly follow the line of the old unnamed street.[10]
