On Way

From Pittsburgh Streets
On Way
Neighborhood Greenfield
Origin of name Second syllable of Kishon, name of the plan of lots
On Alley (1911–1914)

This alley was laid out in 1898 as part of the Kishon plan of lots no. 2, though that plan did not give it a name.[1] It remained unnamed until a city ordinance in 1911 named it On Alley.[2] The same ordinance named a parallel alley Kish Alley;[2] the two names are the two syllables of Kishon, the name of the plan of lots. The plan was probably named for the Kishon River in Israel, mentioned in the Bible.

On Alley became On Way in 1914 when another ordinance changed all alleys in Pittsburgh to ways.[3]

In a 1937 column in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Charles F. Danver ended a bit about unusual Pittsburgh street names by writing, "Your columnist will be—there really is one—On way!"[4]
