Marland Street
Neighborhood Knoxville
Morse Street (until 1926)
Origin of name Maiden name of Josephine Knox

This street was originally named Morse Street.[1] Morse was the maiden name of Josephine Knox, the wife of William Wilbur Knox and daughter-in-law of the Rev. Jeremiah Knox, for whom Knoxville is named.[2][3] Bob Regan says that Josephine was related to Samuel Morse, known for the Morse code.[3][a]

One of the last acts of the Town Council of the Borough of Knoxville, on December 21, 1926, was to rename many of the borough's streets in anticipation of its annexation by Pittsburgh. Morse Street was going to conflict with Morse Way in Hazelwood, so it was renamed Marland Street.[4] Knoxville was annexed by Pittsburgh less than two weeks later, on January 3, 1927.[5]

Notes

  1. Unfortunately Regan confuses this street with Morse Way in Hazelwood.[3]
