This street was originally laid out as 11th Avenue South in 1903 as part of the West Liberty Plan No. 3 by the Beechwood Improvement Company.[1] The avenues in this plan continued the numbering begun in the West Liberty Plan No. 2.[2]
In 1907, a West Liberty borough ordinance changed the names of many streets; Eleventh Avenue (both north and south parts) was renamed Fairacres Avenue.[3]
The northern part of Fairacres Avenue became Fairplay Street in 1909[4] and then Alton Street in 1915.[5]
