This street was originally laid out as 11th Avenue North in 1903 as part of the West Liberty Plan No. 3 by the Beechwood Improvement Company.[1] The avenues in this plan continued the numbering begun in the West Liberty Plan No. 2.[2]
In 1907, a West Liberty borough ordinance changed the names of many streets; Eleventh Avenue (both north and south parts) was renamed Fairacres Avenue.[3]
West Liberty Borough was annexed by the City of Pittsburgh in 1908.[4] The following year, a Pittsburgh ordinance changed the northern part of Fairacres Avenue to Fairplay Street.[5] The street name was changed again in 1915, this time to Alton Street.[6]
