This street was originally laid out as Third Street in 1866 in the original plan of Allentown, laid out by Boyd and Allen. The streets in the southern half of this plan were numbered north to south, beginning with what is today Warrington Avenue.[1]
Two additional plans, recorded in the first half of the 1870s, extended Third Street westward through the western part of Allentown and through what later became the Borough of Beltzhoover.[2][3] The western edge of the Borough of Beltzhoover was modern Montooth Street.
West of Montooth Street, the street was continued as Paul Avenue in a plan laid out in 1888 by S. L. Boggs.[4] This district later became the Borough of Montooth.
The street got its present name as a result of three annexations by the City of Pittsburgh. First, the Borough of Allentown was annexed by Pittsburgh in 1872.[5] In 1881, a Pittsburgh city ordinance renamed many streets to fix duplicates; since there was another Third Street downtown (today the northern half of Commonwealth Place), the street in Allentown was renamed Climax Street.[6]
Next, in 1898, the Borough of Beltzhoover was annexed[7] and a Pittsburgh ordinance changed Third Street in Beltzhoover to Climax Street to match the name in Allentown.[8] Finally, in 1907, the Borough of Montooth was annexed[9] and Paul Avenue was made part of Climax Street.[10]
