Christmas Street

From Pittsburgh Streets
Christmas Street
Neighborhood Hazelwood

Christmas Street was laid out in 1888 in a plan of lots by Edwin Collins.[1] In 1982, Regis Kircher of the city planning department used Christmas Street as an example of a street whose name was inspired by the whim of the developer.[2]

Collins' plan included an unnamed alley between Bristol Street and Bigelow Street, opposite Christmas Street. This alley was officially named Christmas Alley by a city ordinance in 1910[3] and became Christmas Way in 1914.[4] The current street sign at Bristol Street says only "Christmas Way" and gives no indication of Christmas Street, though as far as I can tell the part west of Bristol Street is still officially named Christmas Street.
