Origin of name | Zolium brand roofing material |
Delano Street (1912–1915) |
This street was laid out in 1872 in a subdivision of four lots of the Rich Hill Farm, though this plan did not give the street a name.[1]
Allegheny City was annexed by Pittsburgh in 1907.[2] In 1912, a City Council committee recommended a bill that renamed many streets and alleys and gave names to unnamed ones; it named this street Zolium Street. But the bill was amended on its second reading in Council, and the version that was passed named it Delano Street instead.[3]
Apparently this name was quickly forgotten, for just three years later the city believed the street had no name. Or perhaps the advocates of the name Zolium simply saw another opportunity. An ordinance in 1915, claiming that the street was unnamed, finally succeeded in establishing the name Zolium Street.[4]
The name seems to be that of Zolium brand roofing material, advertised in the Pittsburgh Post in 1909.[5] The only occurrences of the name Zolium I can find in newspapers anywhere, before the naming of this Pittsburgh street, are in advertisements for this roofing, which was heavily advertised between 1906 and 1915.
