The 1852 map of R. E. McGowin shows Dr. W. Werneburg living on St. Mary's Avenue (today 45th Street) south of Butler Street.[1]
This alley was laid out in 1866 for Mary Werneburg.[2] The name was officially established as Werneburg Alley by a city ordinance in 1881.[3] In 1910, another city ordinance, establishing the names of all thoroughfares in the city, changed the spelling (perhaps inadvertently) to Werneberg Alley.[4] It became Werneberg Way in 1914 when another ordinance changed all alleys in Pittsburgh to ways.[5]
