Origin of name | Urbana, Illinois |
The earliest part of this alley was laid out in 1851 by Edward Davison (for whom Davison Street is named), though that plan did not give it a name.[1] It appears, unlabeled, in the 1852 map of R. E. McGowin.[2]
Its first name was Union Alley. This was changed to Urbana Alley in 1881 to avoid confusion with Union Street downtown (today Graeme Street).[3] This ordinance also changed another Union Alley nearby to Peoria Alley (today Peoria Way),[3] which suggests that both alleys were named for the cities in Illinois.
Urbana Alley became Urbana Way in 1914 when another ordinance changed all alleys in Pittsburgh to ways.[4]
