31st Street was laid out in 1871 as part of the borough of Ormsby.[1][2] Its name followed the sequence of numbered streets established in the boroughs of Birmingham and East Birmingham in 1869.[3][4]
The "South" prefix was added by a Pittsburgh city ordinance in 1881;[5] see South First Street for more details.
South 31st Street was vacated in 1950.[6][7]
