Alverado Avenue

From Pittsburgh Streets
Alverado Avenue
Neighborhood Beechview
Third Avenue (until 1908)
Origin of name Sequential numbering of avenues in West Liberty Plan No. 2
Alton Avenue (1908–1909)

This avenue was originally laid out as Third Avenue in 1903 as part of the West Liberty Plan No. 2 by the Beechwood Improvement Company.[1]

The Borough of Beechview was created in 1905.[2] In 1908, a borough ordinance changed the names of many streets; Third Avenue was renamed Alton Avenue.[3]

Beechview was annexed by the City of Pittsburgh in 1909.[4] Later that year a Pittsburgh ordinance changed Alton Avenue to Alverado Avenue,[5] perhaps to avoid confusion with Alta Street in Duquesne Heights. (Nearby Alton Street was not given that name until 1915.)
