Thays Alley (1910–1914) |
This alley was laid out in two plans from 1901 and 1909; the first did not give it a name, but the second called it Theta Alley.[1][2] The other alleys in the 1909 plan were named Beta Alley (today Billiard Way), Gamma Alley (today Gamma Way), and Kappa Alley;[2] all four were named for Greek letters.
In 1910, three years after Allegheny was annexed by Pittsburgh, over 900 streets were renamed to fix duplicates. There was another Theta Alley on the North Side (later Theta Way), so Theta Alley in Regent Square was renamed Thays Alley.[3] It became Thays Way in 1914, when a city ordinance changed all alleys in Pittsburgh to ways.[4]
