This street was laid out in 1874 as Sixth Street by Benjamin McLain and Thomas S. Maple in their first plan of Beltzhoover, so named because it was the sixth street in the plan, starting with Washington Avenue (today Warrington Avenue).[1] This numbering continued a system begun in 1866 in the original plan of Allentown.[2]
The street was continued west of modern Montooth Street as Littell Avenue in an 1888 plan of lots by S. L. Boggs.[3] This district became part of the Borough of Montooth when that borough was created in 1897.[4]
The Borough of Beltzhoover, east of Montooth Street, was annexed by the City of Pittsburgh in 1898.[5] Two months later, a Pittsburgh city ordinance renamed many of the streets in Beltzhoover to fix duplicates; since Pittsburgh already had a Sixth Street downtown, this street was changed to Sylvania Street.[6]
In 1907, Montooth Borough was annexed[7] and Littell Avenue was made part of Sylvania Street.[8]
Sylvania Street became Sylvania Avenue as a result of a city ordinance in 1910, which established the names of all streets in Pittsburgh.[9]
