Summerlea Street
From Pittsburgh Streets
Summerlea Street | |
---|---|
Neighborhood | Shadyside |
Origin of name | Maybe the Summerlee Iron Works |
Sewer Street (until 1881) | |
Origin of name | Maybe because it ran along a stream |
This street originally had the unfortunate name of Sewer Street.[1][2] Perhaps this name referred to the fact that the northern half of the street ran along the route of a small stream.[3]
It was renamed Summerlea Street by a city ordinance in 1881.[2]
The name Summerlea did not appear in Pittsburgh newspapers before the naming of this street, but the similar name Summerlee appeared occasionally in market reports for iron, referring to the Summerlee Iron Works in Scotland. It is possible this is the origin of or inspiration for the street name.
