This alley was laid out as Spring Alley in 1862 in a subdivision of the estate of Malcolm Leech, for whom Leech Street is named.[1] After Pittsburgh annexed the East End in 1868,[2] this name conflicted with Spring Alley in the Strip District (today Spring Way), so it was renamed Sardis Alley by a city ordinance in 1881.[3] It became Sardis Way in 1914, when another ordinance changed all alleys in Pittsburgh to ways.[4]
