This alley was laid out as Spring Alley in a plan of lots by William Woolslayer, recorded in 1869.[1] An earlier plan by Woolslayer, laid out in the 1850s, shows a spring, but it was on the opposite side of Taylor Street, so it seems unlikely that this particular spring was the source of the alley name.[2]
In 1881 a Pittsburgh city ordinance renamed many streets to fix duplicates. Since there was another Spring Alley in the Strip District (today Spring Way), this alley in Bloomfield was changed to Sapphire Alley.[3]
It became Sapphire Way in 1914, when another ordinance changed all alleys in Pittsburgh to ways.[4]
