Walter D. Uptegraff, industrial leader and a director of the Westinghouse Air Brake Co., died yesterday in Niagara Falls.
He was the head of the Defiance Wall Paper Co., Niagara Falls, and one of the owners of the Pittsburgh Wall Paper Co., at New Brighton.
BORN IN PITTSBURGH.
Almost 50 years of connection with the Westinghouse interests had been rounded by Mr. Uptegraff.
He was born in Pittsburgh in 1864 and at the age of 15 began to work for George Westinghouse, when the Westinghouse plant was at Robinson and Darrah sts.
He rose with the company until he became president of the Union Switch & Signal Co., in 1915. He held that position until the Signal Co. was absorbed by th [sic] Air Brake Co. and then became chairman of the board.
At one time he was financial and business agent of George Westinghouse. When the noted inventor and industrialist died, Uptegraff was appointed one of the executors of his estate.
WAS CLUBMAN.
Mr. Uptegraff was a member of the Masonic fraternity and the Mystic Shrine, in addition to the Duquesne Club, Pittsburgh Athletic Association and many other social and business organizations in this city and New York.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Annie G. Marshall Uptegraff, two daughters; Mrs. Elizabeth Sheers of Niagara Falls and Mrs. D. H. Kenneth of Pittsburgh; and 14 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held from the home of Mrs. Shoemaker, 4733 Bayard st., Wednesday.
