I Remember

—When Franz brickyard stood on the present site of the Oliver High School in Brighton Road, North Side, back in the 70s, J. Clifford Franz, general agent for the Toledo, Peoria and Western Railroad here, writes me, that period was before his time on earth. But, as he says, Black Lane and Strawberry Lane, now Marshall Avenue, were prominent country roads of that day. Marshall Avenue was named for "Glorious Tom" Marshall, one of Pittsburgh's best lawyers 50 years ago.

—When Tommy Ross was one of the most popular members of the Harry Davis Stock Company, playing in the old Duquesne Theater about 30 years ago. Maybe you saw him in "The Aviator." He always received a good hand from theater fans. The particular play mentioned was presented with realistic scenic effects and to make things thrilling, included a flying machine, a rather crude vehicle then.

—When Dr. Sao-Ke Alfred Sze, Chinese Ambassador to the United States, visited Pittsburgh 15 years ago, as the guest of the Business and Professional Women's Club. He was met here by Congressman Stephen G. Porter, who at that time was chairman of the Congressional Committee on Foreign affairs. Porter's secretary, then Edmund F. Erk, later a Congressman, accompanied the ambassador here from Washington.
