A Council committee has decided to "amputate" one of the two Highman Streets from the Westwood neighborhood.
The duplication of names had led to a long-standing feud among local residents, who argued their grievances recently before Council.
Kilgallen Acts
In an attempt to settle the matter, Council President Thomas E. Kilgallen yesterday recommended that the name of Shadyhill Rd. be extended to the paved branch of the road now called Highman St.
If approved Monday by Council, the action will leave Westwood with only one Highman St. and a Highman Way.
The unpaved extension of Shadyhill Rd. will be changed to Elmsdale Rd., in accordance with Mr. Kilgallen's motion. He picked it from a list of names submitted by the Public Works Department.
Motion Approved
Maybe it will satisfy Westwood, and maybe it won't. Mr. Kilgallen was a trifle dubious, for he said:
"The neighbors have not been canvassed, as the neighbors don't agree."
Then Mr. Kilgallen pulled the only pun of the year in Council, saying maybe the new name should be Neighborhood Row.
Mr. Kilgallen's motion carried by a vote of five to three.
