From Pittsburgh Streets
137 STREETS TO GET NEW NAMES
City Officials and Postal Chiefs Unite to Wipe Out Duplications.
PROGRAM TENTATIVE

City officials and postoffice authorities reached a tentative agreement at a conference yesterday in the City–County Building to change the names of 137 streets in an effort to correct duplications in the city or adjacent boroughs and townships.

Postmaster George W. Gosser and a number of assistants went over a list of 169 conflicting names with members of the councilmanic Public Works Committee with the result that only 32 of the proposed changes were disputed and these will be held in abeyance until Mr. Gosser submits substitute names.

Mr. Gosser said there are more than 900 duplications of street names in Allegheny county and that the boroughs and townships have been asked to make the necessary corrections. If the changes are made, the postmaster declared, mail delivery will be expedited.

Clark Supervises Work.

The list of proposed changes has been in preparation for the last year under the supervision of City Clerk Robert Clark, who represented the city at meetings with the postal authorities.

Among the suggestions affecting the better known thoroughfares were: Changing the name of Butler street to Arsenal street; Oliver avenue to Bigelow boulevard; North Rebecca street to North Aiken avenue; South Rebecca street to South Aiken avenue; East Ohio street to Butler drive; and West Ohio street to Western avenue. None of these proposed changes met with councilmanic approval and the thoroughfares will retain their present names.

Garland Halts Move.

Mr. Gosser presented a petition signed by 238 residents of North and South Rebecca street requesting that the names be changed to North and South Aiken street, but Chairman Wallace Borland declared that Robert Garland, who was absent, had requested that the present names be kept, in honor to the memory of Rebecca Baum, pioneer resident of the district, for whom the thoroughfares were named.

At the conclusion of the meeting, James F. Malone's motion was adopted asking the city clerk to prepare an ordinance authorizing the street changes agreed upon and to prepare a list showing the thoroughfares held in abeyance.
