This street was laid out as Rhode Island Avenue in 1888 in the plan of West End Place by Samuel W. Black.[1][2] It is named for the state of Rhode Island.[3]

In 1910, an ordinance establishing the names of all the streets in Pittsburgh listed this street as Rhode Island Street.[4]
