Paulowna Street
Neighborhood Polish Hill
Origin of name Perhaps Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna of Russia
Preble Street (until 1910)

Paulowna Street was originally named Preble Street.[1]

In 1910, over 900 streets were renamed to fix duplicates. Preble Street was renamed Paulowna Street to avoid confusion with Preble Avenue in the newly annexed North Side.[2][3] The name Paulowna is an alternative spelling of Pavlovna, a Russian patronymic meaning "daughter of Pavel" (the Russian form of the name Paul). The street may have been named for Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna of Russia (1890–1958), who had made the news with her marriage to Prince Wilhelm, Duke of Södermanland, a couple of years previously.
