South 23rd Street was originally named Phillips Street.[1][2][3]

The street was renamed 23rd Street by an East Birmingham borough ordinance in 1869.[4] The "South" prefix was added by a Pittsburgh city ordinance in 1881;[5] see South First Street for more details.
