Source:Rooney-peterson, pp. 60–62: "By 1870 the city also contained five quarries or stone yards that together employed 267 men, although nineteenth-century Allegheny is not remembered as a center of building-material production. The western slope of Spring Hill, overlooking the East Street Valley, yielded stone that workers [p. 62] extracted for construction and other uses, as well as abundant clay for Allegheny's brickyards."
