Source:Spdc, p. 9: "Pioneer Avenue was established in 1797 as a state road from Pittsburgh to Washington, Pennsylvania. It was later known as the upper road from Boggs Mill and also the Coal Hill and Upper St. Clair Turnpike. It was an artery of major importance, the only route from the south hills into the city."
