Murdoch Street (until 1871) | |
Origin of name | Murdoch family |
This street was originally named Murdoch Street.[1][2] It was named for the Murdoch family, who once owned much of the surrounding land. See Murdoch Street for more about this family.
The name was changed to Beeler Street in 1871.[3] This name honors the Beeler family, who were early settlers and landowners here. The 1862 map of S. N. and F. W. Beers shows the house of "W. Bealer" near the intersection of two roads that are today Fifth Avenue and Wilkins Avenue.[4] The 1872 Hopkins atlas labels this house "Beeler" and also shows a small triangle of land at the corner of Wilkins Avenue and Murdoch Street (modern Beeler Street) labeled "Miss L Beeler."[1] The 1882 edition labels a parcel of land "Miss Kate Beeler" at the middle of the street and says that the surrounding area was laid out in a plan for the estate of Margaret Beeler.[2]
