A road in the location of modern Murdoch Road appears in the 1872 Hopkins atlas, separating the property of James Murdoch to the west from that of his brother William Murdoch to the east and south.[1]

Murdoch Street first appears in the 1890 Hopkins atlas, running from Wilkins Avenue to Bryson Street (modern Covode Street), though it is drawn with dashed lines.[2] This included modern Murdoch Road. Most of the property on both sides of the street was owned by members of the Murdoch family.[2] See Murdoch Street for more about this family.

The Murdoch Farms Plan, laid out in July 1915, separated Murdoch Street into two disconnected pieces.[3] The northern part was renamed Murdoch Road in 1933.[4]
