This street was originally named Barton Street[1][2][3][4] for John Barton (1823–1888),[5][6] who lived on the west side of the street north of Fifth Avenue.[1][2][6][4] Barton was a lawyer and a member of the Allegheny County bar for over 40 years.[5]
In 1890, two years after Barton's death, a petition was presented to Select Council to change the name of Barton Street to Morewood Avenue,[7] which was done by a city ordinance that year.[8] The name honors the family of Edmund Morewood Ferguson (1838–1904),[9] who bought the land across the street from Barton,[2] later bought Barton's land too,[3] and built a mansion on the east side of the street.[9]
