The Boulevard of the Allies was originally to be named Monongahela Boulevard (see Monongahela Street for the etymology of that name). The name Boulevard of the Allies was chosen during its planning in 1919 to honor the Allies of the First World War.[1][2][3][4][5] The boulevard, from Grant Street to Craft Avenue in Oakland, was opened on October 2, 1922,[6][7][8] and formally dedicated on Armistice Day, November 11.[9][10][11][12][13]
The portion of the Boulevard of the Allies downtown, between Commonwealth Place and Grant Street, was previously part of Second Avenue (see that entry for more details). It was made part of the Boulevard of the Allies by a city ordinance in 1927.[14]
