The part of this street south of the line of W Way was laid out as May Street in 1899.[1] The northern portion was laid out as Charles Street in 1925.[2]

Lincoln Place was annexed by Pittsburgh in 1929.[3] The following year, a Pittsburgh city ordinance changed both May Street and Charles Street to Halchess Street.[4]
