Lycurgus Way

From Pittsburgh Streets
Lycurgus Way
Neighborhood Central Lawrenceville
Origin of name Lycurgus, legendary lawmaker of Sparta
Lycurgus Alley (until 1914)
Origin of name Lycurgus

This alley was laid out in 1870 in a subdivision of the Irwin estate for G. S. Bates, though that plan did not give it a name.[1] It was named Lycurgus Alley by a Pittsburgh city ordinance in 1881.[2] The name is that of Lycurgus, the legendary lawgiver of Sparta in ancient Greece.[3]

Lycurgus Alley became Lycurgus Way in 1914 when another ordinance changed all alleys in Pittsburgh to ways.[4]
