A road in the location of modern Crane Avenue appears in the 1862 Allegheny County map of S. N. and F. W. Beers, along with a house labeled "Mrs. Crane" at the northwest corner of this road and the Saw Mill Run road.[1] Mrs. Crane's house or land is also shown in the Hopkins atlases of 1876 and 1886.[2][3]:22 An earlier Allegheny County map, from 1851, does not show the road but does show the house of an "M. Crane."[4] The name Crane Avenue was established by a Pittsburgh city ordinance in 1909.[5]

The Hopkins atlases of 1905 and 1910 give the name Lowen Avenue to the part of the road in the former borough of West Liberty.[6]:12,14[7] This name comes from John Lowen, who owned a plot of land on the north side of the road at the northwest corner of the borough.[2][3]:22[8][6]:14[7]

Part of Crane Avenue west of Banksville Road was formerly named Spring Street.[8][6]:15 The portion in Banksville was once called Bulford Avenue,[9] probably for Daniel Bulford, who had owned land to the north around Banksville Road.[3]:22,23[8]
