Long Way (1914–1925)
Origin of name Longer of two alleys in R. L. Ewalt's plan

This alley was laid out in 1859 as Long Alley in a plan of lots by R. L. Ewalt.[1] Ewalt's plan was a narrow strip bounded by what are now 44th Street, 45th Street, Butler Street, and the tracks of the Allegheny Valley Railroad, and this alley ran down the middle of the strip, in the long direction of the plan, making it the longer of the two alleys in the plan. This was probably the source of its name.

Long Alley became Long Way in 1914 when a Pittsburgh city ordinance changed all alleys to ways.[2]

Long Way was renamed Locarna Way by another ordinance in 1925.[3]
