Lodi Way

From Pittsburgh Streets
Lodi Way
Neighborhood Lower Lawrenceville
Foster Alley (until 1881)
Origin of name William Barclay Foster
Lodi Alley (1881–1914)

This alley was laid out in 1814 as part of the original plan of Lawrenceville by William Barclay Foster (1779–1855), though that plan did not give it a name.[1] It became the major part of Foster's Alley (today Foster Way) no later than 1872.[2]

The portion of Foster's Alley northwest of Butler Street was renamed Lodi Alley by a Pittsburgh city ordinance in 1881, which listed it as "Lodi alley, from Butler street to Allegheny river, formerly Foster alley, Fifteenth ward." The name Foster was reassigned to Foster Street.[3] This ordinance probably intended to rename all of Foster Alley, but overlooked the segments southeast of Butler, which have kept the name Foster to the present day.

Lodi Alley became Lodi Way in 1914 when another ordinance changed all alleys in the city to ways.[4]
