This street appears in William Darby's 1815 map as Liberty Street.[1] By 1830 the part north of Carson Street had been renamed Perry Street,[2][3][4][5][6][7][8] and the part south of Carson was Franklin Street.[2][3][4][7][8]
In 1869, an ordinance of the Birmingham borough council numbered all of the north–south streets, and Perry and Franklin Streets became 16th Street.[9][10] The "South" prefix was added by a Pittsburgh city ordinance in 1881;[11] see South First Street for more details.
