The earliest part of this street, between Stanton Avenue and 52nd Street, was laid out as Holmes Avenue in 1872.[1] It may have been named for William Holmes, who owned land a small distance to the northeast.[2]
The name was officially established as Holmes Street by a city ordinance in 1881.[3]
