---|---|
Neighborhood | North Oakland |
Origin of name | Henry Reis |
Henry Street was laid out in 1851 in a plan of lots by Edward Dithridge and Henry Reis.[1] It was probably named for Reis, just as Dithridge Street was named for Dithridge.
James D. Van Trump says it was named for Henry Lloyd, a local resident.[2] However, Lloyd bought the Dithridge house at the corner of Dithridge Street and Pennsylvania Avenue (today Fifth Avenue) after these streets had been laid out;[3] R. E. McGowin's 1852 map shows Henry Street yet labels the house "Dithridge."[4] So this origin of the name seems chronologically impossible.
